God’s Pronouns are He/Him/His

“But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.  Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge” (1 Cor 8:6-7).

So-called “Progressives” and liberals often talk of God giving us birth and thus having motherly characteristics; and therefore we should think of God as both Father and Mother.  Some have even gone to the extent of identifying God as “she” without any warrant or justification.  While it is true that God describes Himself as having such female characteristics, in the bible God always identifies Himself in masculine terminology.

God reveals Himself as “The Father”, not “The Mother”; Jesus is the Son, not the Daughter; Jesus calls God his Father, the Father calls Jesus his Son.  God always speaks of Himself as masculine even though He is a spirit.  He likens himself to a husband whose wife, Israel, is an adulteress.  Jesus calls Himself the Groom, and the Church is His bride.  The imagery is very strongly masculine.  When God talks about the womb or giving birth He’s not revealing Himself as a female/male deity; He uses female imagery to illustrate His compassion, love, and creative power.  This female imagery shows the tenderness and strength of love that a mother has for her child, without saying that God is a mother.  But the revelation of God is strictly in male terms.  So there is no biblical reason to speak of God as both Father and Mother, or simply as Mother, or as “she”.

They also urge us to present God in His female imagery when we minister to people with a bad father image but who have a better mother image.  Yes, we do need to be sensitive when presenting the gospel or attempting to bring Scripture to bear when counselling such people; but this must not be at the expense of Truth; we cannot present a false god with a predominately or totally female aspect to them just because they have difficulty in relating to a male.  The answer for such people is to present God as He is, as the Father; He has nothing to be ashamed of.  How can such people ever have a right understanding of what true maleness, true masculinity, true fatherhood is, if they’re not shown it?  How can men ever learn to be men if they have no picture of what a man is?  How can they ever relate as a man to a woman?  How can women ever relate to men if they don’t know the true differences between the sexes, and what to look for in a man?  What model can they use?  How can they ever overcome the effects of abuse by men if they can’t see how wrong the perpetrator of that abuse was?  To present to such needy people a female oriented god is confusion, and it could only exacerbate and perpetuate their problems.  We present the revelation of God to people, whatever their backgrounds, as He has revealed Himself in the Scriptures.  Only then can we expect God to bless it.

“….for the weapons of our warfare are not worldly but have divine power to destroy strongholds.  We destroy arguments and every proud obstacle to the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ….” (2 Cor 10:4 RSV).

“Sovereign Jesus” is a site which takes issue with some false ideas and views of Christianity in circulation, both inside and outside the Church.  It is written for Christians who are confused or demoralised by the false teaching of so-called biblical and historical scholars and academics who undermine the Bible.  The internet is filled with websites of disillusioned ex-Christians-turned-atheists who want to rob faithful believers of their faith and eternal security, claiming that they were once believers themselves but who finally “saw through” the “hoax” or the “fraud” of Christianity and the Bible and who have now taken upon themselves the role of noble champion come to rescue Christians from their delusion.  But it is these “heroes” who are the deluded ones and they will find out, too late, that they had it right the first time.

I’ve read their books and watched their podcasts so I’m familiar with their arguments.  I also engaged with some of these arguments whilst doing my theological degree about twenty years ago.  But for this website I take as my starting point the position that the Bible is true, a position mocked by them because it is unscholarly, and that, they say, to argue the truth of the Bible from the Bible is a circular argument.  I agree with the latter but not with the former, and take this position anyway because it has merit, and the Bible has internal evidence which makes it consistent with itself.  And the Bible itself, besides being a religious text, also has good objective textual history, particularly the New Testament, which can be traced back to the first century CE.

The most convincing lies are those which contain much truth, and make much use of scripture.  Such deception causes some Christians to be side-tracked and lost in confusion and error, and others to even abandon Christ altogether.  The scholarship of these scholars, many of whom claim to be Christian and lecture in theological colleges, is based on liberal theology, also known as Historical Criticism, which starts from a position of unbelief; so the end result will inevitably be denial of the truth of the Bible in whatever field is under scrutiny.  Most of the “experts” who “explain” it for us, although having high academic qualifications, don’t really believe or accept the Bible as authoritative and accurate; so they explain away the miraculous, deny that the authors of scripture were really the authors, deny that certain books should even be in the Bible, and seek to undermine and change our whole understanding of scripture by perverting and reinterpreting it to suit their unbelieving and unbiblical theology.

The apostle Paul warns: “See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the universe, and not according to Christ” (Col 2:8 NRSV).

There are here many positive articles which teach, encourage, and edify, and others which have been taken from books or websites.  And then there are items and snippets which are just plain interesting which I’ve come across in books no longer in print, and which are too precious to lose.  By putting them on my website I hope to preserve them and give them to the public again, giving them a new lease of life for a new audience.

The majority of the articles on this web site are copyright by me, the author and owner of this website.  I’ve acknowledged those written by other authors appropriately.
